You're So Vain, I Bet You Think This Post Is About You
Courteousy of the Globe and Mail. (Who got it from USA Today, who aren't even mentioned in that article…)
"Toes are going under the podiatric knife, writes Olivia Barker in USA Today. Those second and third toes -- the ones that poke out beyond the big toe, the ones seen by some as embarrassing as a set of jug ears -- are getting shortened. And the fourth and fifth toes are getting straightened. "Shoes are like jewelry now," says Suzanne Levine, a New York podiatric surgeon. Toe shortening involves cutting a small piece of bone out of the joint and reattaching the tendon. Patients are back to the office after a weekend, back jogging in a month."
I can understand things like ears, noses, &c.— but toes? Somedays I fear for society…
It can be a self-confidence thing. Maybe no one notices toes, but if a person feels self-conscious about them, why not fix them? Especially when it seems like such a relatively minor procedure.
You call someone hacking away a piece of the bone a relatively minor procedure? I'm glad you're not my surgeon. "well, we need to do a quadruple bypass. don't worry.. its a relatively minor procedure".
Hey, confidence is always a good thing in a surgeon.
I'm assuming that he's refering to the length of time it takes to recover and the risks involved plus the fact it's just done under local anethesia.
Finally, while I can understand some people being self-concious of their feet, the fact that so many people seem to be doing it (enough to warrant an article anyways) is what bothers me.
Then again, I'm not a huge fan of cosmetic surgery for the sake of cosmetic surgery to begin with, so you have to understand that that would colour my views somewhat.
Yeah. It kinda... I think there are better ways for someone with an MD to help people. But.. hey.. what do I know?
