My room mate sent me this link to shots of Sun's 3D desktop environment called 'Project Looking Glass'. It's got the standard Sun desktop environment issues (translation: the window theme is ugly as sin), but other than that it's a fairly impressive looking system.
I can't help but wondering what the required specs for the final release are going to be.
I have a hard enough time finding a desktop background that I like of a single scene. Trying to choose a panoramic desktop will be impossible.
But it does look pretty cool. I can't help but wonder how the interface will work; stuff like this makes me start thinking that we will need something better than a mouse to make it really natural.
I have to agree with that. I tried out Sphere XP a while back, and the one thing I noticed was that the controls just seemed awkward. (Especially with a mouse that allows scrolling both horizontally and vertically.)
I'm personally holding out for mind control.
I've heard a lot of people who thought the Minority Report computer system was stupid. But I think it's the natural way to go.
Actually, I think "computers" will start to sink into the background... I really think that it will go more "Star Trek," where the computer is everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. "Computer, check e-mail and display it on the kitchen monitor" will become a standard command, I think.
For a stepping stone, however, I agree with Peter... it will be a lot like the Minority report computer, with tactile window managment and the ability to manipulate objects simply by movement. The only problem is that your arms would get tired after a while.
Hey, I'd rather exercise my arms to use my computer rather than continue working on this case of RSI that I've been developing.
