Originally this was a long unfocused rant about GNU software projects (focusing largely on GNOME), bloat, package dependencies, 'design by committee'-style decisions (including one reference to the ATM packet size), and how Debian was begining to move from the 'pissing me off' section that most operating systems occupy to the 'fucking pissing me off' section that I've reserved for distros like Mandrake. All caused by the fact that GnuCash wouldn't install without first installing the enlightenment sound daemon on a machine that has no sound drivers loaded.
So what happened to it?
Well, call it a flash of clarity. I hit about 500 words and realised that not only had I failed to develop any semblence of a coherent argument, but I had also completely lost track of where I was going with it. So instead (and to make up for the lack of content in the previous entry) you get this lovely meta-entry. Enjoy!
I find it hard to stay mad at Gnome for long :)
I can stay mad at Gnome for ages, I'm more of a KDE man myself.
Then again, the last time I did anything with Gnome was trying to compile 1.4 on my old Slackware machine. Please note the word trying, it refused to accept the fact that I had particular libraries installed even when I used the configure option to tell them where they were.
The rest of my experiences come from when Gnome was still looking like it was trying to copy KDE 1.x (which technically it was, but that's another story.)
On another note: is it Gnome or GNOME? I know it's an acronym, but so is GNU and you often see them spelling it Gnu.
Yeah. I would try gnome, but it wont emerge on my system. I get an error locating the freetype library when I try and emerge pango.. every time. Even If I do a --deep.
Until gnome behaves.. im a kde man.
Don't blame me - it's ld's fault. :-)
I'm a bit more of a KDE man, as well, though I also was a bit of an LFS man until recently. That clearly shows my insanity. Your mileage may, accordingly, vary.
