Commentless Entry Ho!
A trip to the mall yielded both a copy of High Fidelity and an urge to purge my head of syrupy seasonal music with one of the few Christmas themed songs I can stand. So, in honour of that, I present my all-time top 5 Pogues songs.
Number 5: The Broad Majestic Shannon, from "If I Should Fall From Grace with God"
Number 4: Fairytale of New York, from "If I Should Fall From Grace with God"
Number 3: Rainy Night in Soho, from the "Poguetry in Motion" EP
Number 2: Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, from the "Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah" EP
Number 1: The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn, from "Rum, Sodomy & the Lash"
High Fidelity.
Best Movie Ever.
Or at least, in the world of Derek Young.
The book is much better, although the musical references become slightly more obscure if you don't happen to know much about mid-90s British groups.
Yeah, I read the book last year, and meant to buy it, but didn't. I actually knew most of the groups, through too much carpooling with a british boss.
I enjoyed the british guy - american girl angle they managed to toss in with him and marie de salle.
And some of the parts that I never understood. I have the full original INTENDED screen play in .txt, and you can see they tried to get some of that in, but it just didn't make it.
