28 Frimaire CCXII (December 18, 2003)
White Light / White Heat
What an odd morning. The power was out three times between 9 and 10, which is irritating in itself, but the first time it went out was rather, uh, unique.
To set the scene: it's sometime between 9 o'clock and 9:15, I'm lying in bed, dreaming about something or other. The thing is, I'm not completely asleep; I'm at the stage where I know I'm dreaming and I'm concious of what's happening around me, but I'm still out of it.
Then, the power goes out.
Seeing as all the lights were already off in my room, I didn't know that at the time. All I know is that there's a sudden stabbing pain in the back of my head, everything goes white, and all my thoughts are drowned out by a sudden loud noise in my head — call it a roar, a bang, whatever. Needless to say, this completely wakes me up.
So, I'm lying in bed, dazed, trying to figure out what just happened, when suddenly I hear a shrill beeping coming from the other room. It's my UPS, informing me that it just reset itself. That's when I realise what's happened: the power's just gone out, and I got an electric shock when it did so.
Yet another reason for me to be glad I'm moving out of here.
Me == baffled.
I think this needs more explanation. How did a power outage result in electrocution to the back of your head?
I don't know! This is all just speculation, but it's the only thing that makes sense, and people I know who've received shocks say my description is accurate by their experience.
My guess is that there was a surge of some sort when the power went out, but I don't know how I got hit. There are no plugs on that side of the room, and there should be no wires running through that wall.
At least one person has suggested (given other problems I've had) that it's just that my apartment hates me and is trying to kill me.
Maybe it was ball lightning! That would be SO cool.
