Go Go Speed Racer?
I got my hands on some extra RAM from Dmitrii, who no longer has a need for his SPARCstation. The RAM's now up to 128MB, so hopefully it will swap to disk less and that should result in faster CGI scripts. Hopefully.
Hmmmm, now this is odd. OpenFirmware tells me there's 128MB of RAM (which is consistent with having 8 16MB sticks), but Linux tells me there's only 116 MB.
Odd.
Perhaps some of the RAM is bad? Have you run memtest?
Nope, haven't run memtest yet.
The problem is that there's two versions of memtest available; one is memtest86 -- I don't think I need to go into why that won't work on a SPARC. The other works on multiple architectures but runs from within Linux, meaning it will only test the memory that Linux finds.
I'm used to Linux not finding all my memory, as some stuff does get reserved (ex. my Celeron only has approximately 61 out of 64MB available, while my PPC has about 108 of 112.) What I find odd is the fact that so much of it is missing, this is almost 10% of my RAM we're talking about.
I just realised that OpenFirmware might have a utility to check memory in the diagnostic programs that are built into the ROM. I'll have to check when I get home.
