Small Survey
I've been using Firefox 1.5 for a little while now (basically, since it was officially released), and I can't say I'm terribly impressed with it. Namely, I'm finding it to be a system-crippling memory hog.
If I do an hour or so of my standard web browsing, then Firefox will quickly balloon to between 200 and 300 megabytes of RAM usage. On my home system, this results in a noticeable sluggishness (being approximately half the RAM), whilst on another system this resulted in the system becoming virtually unusable. The only response to this is to make a note of what sites are open, close Firefox, and start again. This happens regardless of whether one extension or many are running (as both machines had different setups).
So, what I want to know is: has anyone else who is using Firefox 1.5 noticed this?
I briefly tried Firefox 1.5 for the Mac, but decided I'd just stick with Safari for RSS and system integration reasons. So I'll cast a null vote into the survey.
Not sure if you are using the Windoze version or not, but use FF all day at work (1.5 since it came out) and found it to be a lot less stable (more crashes, hangs) and buggy in rss (rss menus stop working properly with mouse). I have 1gb on work pc and routinely run out of memory for assorted other reasons, so can't say I noticed it being worse than before.
I use FF1.5 occasionally on my proper machine at home (a Mac) and do not notice any kind of memory bloat.
Perhaps the memory leak is only a problem visiting certain sites? or types of site?
To avoid having to make a note of which sites
are open, install the `sessionsaver' extension
using Tools --> Extensions
Since it visits Web sites you must be connected
to the Internet when you restart an empty
Firefox. The extension is slow, but works fine
to restore my 10 windows (or frames, depending
on your jargon) with a total of 36 tabs.
